Situated just east from one of the most popular trails of Annapurna Sanctuary, the Mardi Himal trek is a hidden gem. As it is a newly opened trail, few trekkers make their way to Mardi Himal Base Camp, spectacularly situated at the base of Mardi Himal mountain and the impressive Machhapuchhre - “Fish Tail” mountain. This means that the trail is particularly peaceful and relatively empty. Machhapuchhre is a sacred mountain which has never been climbed and this is as close as you can get to this mountain. We get up close and personal with Fishtail as this is the trail leading to the foothills of this mountain and it provides a great close up views of Machhapuchhre. From the High Camp we can also see a great and vast panorama over the Annapurnas and panorama of the whole vast area from bird’s eye view point. This secluded trail is perfect for people, who want a little less crowds and commerce and a little more unspoiled nature and solitude.
This trek also offers a great cultural experience as you get to witness local life in the traditional villages of Siding and Lwang on your descent through a different trail down the other side of the hills. Lwang is famous for its organic tea plantation, stone paved streets and great mountain views. We can witness local life where people often use traditional tools and traditional methods of preparing their food – like churning butter by hand or breaking maize or wheat into grit and the flour.
The trail leads along small narrow paths, through magical rhododendron forests, until you climb out of the forest around 3,300m/10,825ft. The landscape changes quite abruptly into a rough high mountain landscape, with amazing views of Mardi Himal, Machapuchre, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli. From High Camp, you can climb in about 3-4 hours along a mountain ridge, to Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4,450m/14,600ft, which offers spectacular close up views of the entire Annapurna Range and especially Fishtail mountain.
There are simple teahouses and homestays along the entire route. You are likely to encounter very few other trekkers in this secluded and pristine region and we have a good chance to encounter wildlife as animals are not disturbed by many trekkers here.
