Everest Monastery - 10 Days

Everest Monasteries trek is perfect for those who have less time or who prefer to stay at lower altitude, but who still wish to set their foot in the legendary land of the Sherpas and to see Mt Everest and visit many monasteries, stupas and gompas along the way. During this trek we get to look into the heart of the villages of mountain dwellers as this trek features a wide range of spectacular scenery combined with unique cultural encounters with the Sherpa people who inhabit these high altitude regions and with Buddhist tradition of the region. The journey begins in the city of Kathmandu, from where a short flight will transfer us to Lukla, the heart of the Khumbu region in just 45 minutes.

From Lukla this trek continues through the lush vegetation of Sagarmatha National Park, with pine forests, rhododendron trees and an abundance of wildlife, to Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,300ft). A day of rest is necessary in Namche in order to get acclimatized to higher altitudes. We take a walk into Thame and Upper Thame and we visit local Thame Buddhist Monastery on our acclimatization day. Thame monastery is one of the oldest in the Khumbu region, and is famous for the annual Mani Rimdu festival. Thame is also home to many famous Sherpa mountaineers, including Apa Sherpa, who holds the world record for summiting Everest 21 times and it’s a childhood home of Tenzing Norgay, who was one of the first men to climb Mt Everest.

The following days trekking will bring us to the village of Tengboche (3,870m/12,700ft), home to the famous Tengboche Buddhist monastery reputed by photographers as one of the best places to capture the awesome beauty of Mt. Everest (8848m/29,000ft) and its neighbouring peaks. Tengboche Monastery is the largest gompa of Khumbu region and from here we have a panoramic view of the Himalayan mountains, including the well-known peaks of Tawache, Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku.

The concluding days of this adventure will be spent in the delightful and scenic village of Khumjung where we visit Khumjung Monastery which has a Yeti scalp on display and later on we visit Syangboche Stupa, one of the most photogenic stupas with a backdrop of white peaks. Then we walk back down to Lukla from where we will take a short flight back to Kathmandu, enjoying the last views of the awe-inspiring Himalayan range.

02 Kathmandu - Lukla - Phakding 2,650m/8,700ft 40min flight, 4hr trek
After breakfast, we take an early morning flight to Lukla. After an adventurous 40 minute flight above breath taking mountains, we reach the Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla. This is one of the most beautiful air routes in the world culminating in a dramatic landing on a hillside surrounded by high mountains peaks. Upon arrival at Lukla, we meet our other crew members and after some packing and arrangements, we start our trek through the village of Lukla until we reach Phakding. To assist in acclimatization, we only have a short hike today. Overnight at Phakding.
03 Phakding - Namche Bazaar 3,440m/11,300ft 6hr trek
We cross the DudhKosi by the first of several bridges built by the Himalayan Trust. Continuing gradually up the valley the trail undulates through the forest through Benkar and Chumoa before reaching Monjo where we will have lunch. After lunch we enter the Sagarmatha National Park and we follow the DudhKosi further north, crossing from one bank to the other. This day's walk takes us through magnificent forests of rhododendron, giant fir and magnolia trees, and both in spring and autumn the ground is bright with flowers. After Jorsale the trail climbs over a spur and alongside a dripping moss-grown cliff, to cross the west fork of the river, the BhoteKosi, and start the steep climb to Namche Bazaar. About 300 m. up this ascent we should have a first view, cloud permitting, of the summit of Everest appearing behind the great ridge of Nuptse-Lhotse. Another short climb brings us to Namche Bazaar, administrative centre of the Khumbu region and headquarters for the Mount Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park. Namche is a prosperous Sherpa town and an important trading centre with a weekly market.
04 Namche Bazzar - Day hike to Thame Buddhist Monastery 5hr hike
This is the day for acclimatisation to altitude. We spend the day taking a hike to Thame valley and Thame Buddhist Monastery. Namche Bazzar is the main centre of the Everest (Khumbu) region and has government offices, ATMs, Internet cafes, shops, restaurants, a bakery and a colorful market each Friday evening and Saturday. We can visit the Tourist Visitor Center near the headquarter of the Sagarmatha National Park where we can observe an assortment of things related to the first Everest ascenders, Sherpa culture and learn about the various plant and animal life of the Everest region. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.
05 Namche Bazar - Tengboche Monastery 3,870m/12,700ft 6hr trek
Start to walk up to the spectacular situated Everest View Hotel where we have tea. We will be rewarded with excellent views of the Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and many other magnificent Himalayan peaks.

The fantastic panorama of mountains surrounding us includes Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse and AmaDablam. Tengboche has long been a sacred spot. The Lama Sange Dorje, who first brought Buddhism to the region, is said to have flown from his monastery in Tibet over the Himalaya, landing and leaving his footprints here and at Pangboche.

Visitors should be careful to respect the spirit of this special place, particularly by observing the ban on killing or hurting any living creature in the area.

Tengboche is home to the region’s largest monastery, a destination for monks of all ages throughout the country to practice and study Buddhism. The public is invited to witness their puja ceremonies, where they chant prayers and perform rituals inside the ornately decorated gompas. We stay overnight is a teahouse.

06 Tengboche Monastery – Khumjung Monastery 3,810m/12,500m 5hr trek
We descend for around 2 hours through a pine and fir forest, then we walk across Dudhkoshi River riverside and make a final ascend from here, passing through small villages and finally reaching Khumjung. The Khumjung valley surrounded by the snowy peaks of Kondge and Thamserku and the sacred peak Khumbila, hosts a well known Khumjung Monastery that houses a yeti scalp. We also visit Hillary School which is at the same site. Another set of busy and colorful monasteries, lined with prayer flags and prayer wheels, are braced along the slopes high above this traditional village. We stay overnight is a teahouse.
07 Khumjung – Syangboche Stupa 3,720m/12,200ft 3hr trek
From Khumjung we have a gentle day’s walk, through the stone-lined pathways of the extended village area until we reach the next village of Khunde. Khunde is a big Sherpa settlement where we can see the traditional way of life in this part of the world. This is a pretty and neat village, with plots of land divided by charming stone walls and green roofed buildings. People grow potatoes and buckwheat here as their staple food. After Khunde, we leave the village life behind a follow a very secluded path. On the way we get spectacular mountain views and occasionally we may meet yaks and their herders. Once we reach Syangboche, we climb a little further to see the famous airstip and Syangboche Stupa. Overnight in Syangboche in a teahouse.
08 Syangboche - Monjo 2,835m/9,300ft 5hr trek
It takes us about one hour to descend the stone stair trail back to Namche Bazaar. We have enough time in Namche to shop and relax in a bakery before moving on. A steep descent from Namche Hill leads to the suspension bridge crossing the DudhKosiriver near the confluence of the DhudhKoshi and the BhoteKoshi Rivers. We cross the DudhKoshi River twice at separate locations before reaching Monjo. Upon this juncture, we are out of the Sagarmatha National Park after exiting from its official entrance near Monjo and finally reach Monjo Village. Monjo is comparatively a quieter place to stay than Namche. Overnight in Monjo in a teahouse.
09 Monjo - Lukla 2,860m/9,380ft 5hr trek
We are trekking by the same route down, crossing through open plains, rhododendron and pine forests, and in the distance we can still see snowy mountain peaks. We take time and walk leisurely today as this is the last day of our trek. We re-experience the Sherpa’s culture, life and faith in expressed by the plentiful prayer stones and prayers flag while we walk through the villages. Upon arrival in Lukla, we have plenty of time to relax, stretch those sore legs, and recall the experiences of the last couple of days. Overnight in Lukla in a teahouse.
10 Lukla - Kathmandu
We fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to a hotel. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.

NOTE: Occasionally the flight back from Lukla is cancelled due to bad weather. In this case we would try to fly back to Kathmandu on the morning of the next day.
