Panchassee Mountain is an ancient pilgrimage climbing from the level of Fewa Lake to about 2500 meters, from where excellent views of the Annapurna mountain-massif are possible. There are wonderful trekking trails in every direction to the five peaks of this holy mountain. Thickly forested, Panchassee wears a garment of very lush vegetation: tree orchids, Rhododendron blooms and colorful flowers. She wears in Her hair throughout each year. In the above photo is shown a group of exotic village lodges forty-five minutes below the summits on the Gatee-Cheena route.
One of the delights that trekking around Panchassee can bring is a visit to her tiny lake nestled in jungle, as if a jewel below the western summit. As a female symbol for the “waters of our being”, this lake is a basis for the Mountain’s motherhood. There are old, stone-stepped pilgrimage approaches upon which we climb past grassland greens and into vastnesses of Yoga symbols for which this Mountain is famous. Panchassee is a unique nature experience that provides inspiring vistas at every turn of the path: but be ready for serious exercise during the climb!

"Panchassee" means "five seats of the Divine Mother": "Panch" means five, "as" is from the root word of Asana (the Yoga schools of physical posture) meaning a a seat or place, and the double “ee” represents the female gender. The symbol of five represents an ancient Yoga system in which there are experienced five levels of existence. Three of these levels are of our thinking, feeling and sensing, with the Above and Below completing this symbol of manifestation. Just as Everest, Annapurna or Daulagiri, Panchassee is a divine Mountain-mother to the local people, visible during annual Mela celebration in November.
The holy island in Fewa Lake is a sister to Panchassee, and this rock is a symbol of a divine creation out of the “waters of being”, just as with the Panchassee lake. Panchassee streams provide much of the water for this unique island experience: feed Her temple fish when visiting. On Mela day offerings of grain, grown on the terraces of local villages are made, in a symbolic refertilization of the Earth as a divine Mother who gives us everything.
Devotees wear red for the Panchassee Mela and generally cross the peaks after being blessed by Her lake water. This crossing is quite steep and physical fitness is required.
It is during the crossing
that the grains are scattered and the Earth rejuvenated: this celebration is also of the Shakti principle in Nepali culture and is many
thousands of years old.On Panchassee mountain are many “seats” of Yoga practice. The ruins in his photo are just above the village lodges on Panchassee, one hour below the peaks. The sadhu perhaps sat inside and held in his mind the view before the eyes: a nature vastness symbolic in the Vedic culture for the divine Female as Daughter (Kumari), Wife, Mother or Yogini. A visit to this mountain is a return to an Age when womanhood implied Shakti, a love and energy of strength and force.
